In terms of capacity requirements, consider the materials you will be hauling and how often you will be operating your machine. You will also want to consider what type of weather and environment you will be operating in every day. For assistance determining the perfect skid steer for your operation, contact our team.

Skid steers, also known as track loaders or compact loaders, are a versatile and powerful machine commonly utilized in construction and earthmoving applications. Their reliable operation and ability to navigate difficult terrain makes them a great choice for even the most demanding work environments. Skid steers typically feature four wheels that can be independently operated on the left or right side. This allows the unit to turn via differential steering, where one set of wheels moves slower than the other. By utilizing the method of steering, skid steers can perform a zero-radius “pirouette” turn. As a result, skid steers are ideal for sites with limited space.
In addition to models with standard tires, compact loaders are also available with track-style wheels. These units are known as track loaders, and their wheels make them a great choice for difficult terrain like mud, snow, and loose soil. Track-style tires are not a good choice for hard surfaces such as concrete however as they can heavily damage them. Due to the operator’s proximity to the load, skid steers were once regarded as unsafe compared to a forklift. Modern units now feature high-strength ROPS and enclosed cabs to keep operators safe in the event of a dropped load. These units can also be equipped with a variety of attachments that allow a single machine to perform multiple jobs, optimizing versatility.
The first skid steer was a 3-wheeled unit invented in 1957 by the Keller brothers. It was purpose-built to aid a farmer in his process of clearing manure from his barn. The rights to this invention were later purchased from the Keller brothers by the Melroe Manufacturing Company in 1958. The Keller brothers were hired to refine their invention, releasing the M-200 as the first mass-produced skid steer. These units would later transition from 3-wheel designs to 4-wheel configurations, setting the standard for modern units. Though skid steers are still utilized in agriculture, they have become a staple for construction and earthmoving applications as well. To learn more about skid steers, contact our team today!
